Advisory board, speakers, and attendees come from all fields of business analytics and academia like data science, big data, data mining, machine learning, artificial intelligence, or predictive modeling. What brings them here is their common desire to attend an event without being prospected by other attendees.

Data science is transforming many industries, from health care to banking to heavy manufacturing, and women are leading the charge. That was the crux of the Cambridge Women in Data Science Conference, held March 5 as part of a global event launched by Stanford University in 2015 to educate, inspire, and connect women in tech. The local conference, now in its second year, was hosted by the Institute of Applied Computational Science (IACS) at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences; the MIT Institute for Data, Systems, and Society; and Microsoft. Distinguished speakers from academia and industry presented technical talks to more than 240 female technologists, researchers, and students, highlighting research in such areas as deep learning applications in oncology, data science tools for pollution monitoring, and the challenges of preventing bias in algorithms. In addition, local winners of an international datathon/kaggle challenge, held in conjunction with Stanford's global conference were announced, and students presented posters and took advantage of networking and recruiting opportunities.

Clustered data is all around us. The best way to attack it? Inspired by the models, Sourav and his team at Manifold developed an open source-implementation package for the Python community to use -- and build upon: Mixed Effects Random Forests. Sourav will explain how the mixed effects random forests model marries the world of classical mixed effect modeling with modern machine learning algorithms, and how it can be extended to be used with other advanced modeling techniques like gradient boosting machines and deep learning. He will provide examples of use cases of mixed effects random forests, and demonstrate MERF performance on synthetic and real data.

First started in 2015, the Open Data Science Conference (better known as the ODSC) has now blossomed into a one of the top ten Data Science Conferences in a year (by various compilations). This year, the ODSC West was held at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport, from November 2 to 4. Sheamus McGovern, the ODSC Chair and his team pulled in business executives and engineers to a packed and sold-out event. An event of this magnitude comes together with a ton of planning and working together. I am, attempting here, to give you a snapshot tour of what I experienced. The tech-focused piled into eleven premium training sessions that kicked off in parallel to the Accelerate AI event which was the new one-day format for the business folks.
